Africa's Contemporary Art Landscape

eye catching, reflective art
many pieces so striking they will be REMEMBERED MONTHS AFTER VIEWING

“The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” – Aristotle

As the first international art fair on the continent, The FNB Joburg Art Fair plays a pivotal role in supporting the burgeoning contemporary arts landscape in Africa. The Fair provides a space for leading artists, galleries, collectors, writers, thinkers and art lovers to congregate.

This year, the FNB Joburg Art Fair has four dedicated categories for its exhibitors and is proud to announce the following Galleries, Young Galleries, Arts Platforms and Special Projects presenting at the 7th edition of the Fair.

FNB Joburg Art Fair is the leading African art fair and first of its kind on the Continent. Established in 2008 by Artlogic, a sponsorship and events company.  The Fair aims to continue to introduce South African and African artists to an array of creative individuals and art enthusiasts in South Africa, Africa and globally.

book launches + signings, performances, walkabouts, scheduled talks

To make the most of the Art Fair and to gain insight into the bigger picture attending the scheduled talks is a recommendation.  I attended Friday’s 12h30 – 13h30 entitled “Current Tendencies of the Nigerian Art Scene” which was very enlightening and interesting listening to guest speaker Joseph Gergel Curator at African Artist’s Foundation and Co-Curator LagosPhoto Festival.

And guest speaker Oliver Enwonwu founder and Editor-in-Chief of Omenka magazine

Oliver is also chief executive, Revilo, an art publishing company, and director, Omenka Gallery Foundation.  He also sits on the board of several organizations including the National Gallery of Art, Nigeria, and the Reproduction Rights Society of Nigeria.  Oliver has exhibited extensively and curated many shows all over the world.

GARY STEPHENS FEATURED in LATEST OMENKA publication which is on sale at the fair

The publication comes as a recommended buy.  Inclusive of several interesting articles the Omenka lifestyle publication features South African based American artist, Gary Stephens who works in a variety of media including painting, drawing, printmaking and photography.  His works have been featured in many exhibitions across the globe and one very striking piece is on show at the entrance (on the far right side) to the FNB Art Fair.

Photography gains a foothold on the Nigerian Market
Arthouse’s May 2012 successful inclusion of photography in an auction achieved a 100% success sales rate with all the 6 works offered realizing a sum of N3,740,000 ($23,375).  The top-selling photograph on the evening, Adekola Adeleke’s The Charge, sold for N2,200,000 ($13,750), establishing a record for the artist.

FNB INTERNATIONAL ART PARTNER – LAGOSPHOTO

Launched in 2010, LagosPhoto is the first and only international arts festival of photography in Nigeria. In a month long festival, events include exhibitions, workshops, artist presentations, discussions and large scale outdoor prints display throughout the city with the aim of reclaiming public spaces and engaging the general public with multifaceted stories of Africa.  LagosPhoto aims to establish a community for contemporary photography which will unite local and international artists through images that encapsulate individual experiences and identities from across all of Africa.

LagosPhoto presents and educates about photography as it is embodied in the exploration of historical and contemporary issues, the sharing of cultural practices, and the promotion of social programs.

While photography has historically been positioned as a “window to the world”, with an immediate and tangible relationship to its subject matter, many contemporary artists gaze and produce works that negotiate the complex social and political concerns that define a new Africa in the twenty-first century. They explore how the ubiquity of images using photography as a catalyst to explore the changing realities of Africa.
